At the Republican Presidential Debate on Fox News, Brit Hume and Chris Wallace demonstrated class and asked relevant questions as usual. It is amazing what a debate actually looks like when the television hosts know the issues. It is even better when the candidates are not served softballs so they can pander to their base.
One of the most enlightening moments of the debate was when Mike Huckabee and Ron Paul were allowed to talk back and forth discussing the War in Iraq. There was no consideration for time; they went at it for at least two minutes. The discourse was wonderful for the American people, the Republican Party, and it gave me more respect for the political process as a whole.
Moreover, Chris Wallace did not hold back when asking questions. He really held Ron Paul accountable for his position on the War. Likewise, if a candidate made a statement during the debate or made an error in judgment in the past, he was held to account.
Mitt Romney undoubtedly was attacked the most for his inconsistent policies in Massachusetts. He was asked to explain why he hired illegal aliens to mow his lawn. He also increased taxes on specific goods and services although he lowered taxes in other areas. His response was that Massachusetts was a liberal State and he did what he could. While this was not a very good answer, the fact that he even had to answer these questions demonstrates why the Democrats are afraid to enter Fox News.
Lastly, I would like to mention that John McCain looked surprisingly phenomenal. Maybe he has accepted that he is not going to win the Presidential Race, which allowed him to loosen up and shine. In an act of pure class, Mike Huckabee praised McCain for his patriotism. Even Rudy Giuliani said he would vote for John McCain if he were not running. Can we expect to see a Giuliani/ McCain Republican ticket? I think they would be a force to be reckoned with.
