George Will shreds Mike Huckabee. . . .

On the Republican side, Mike Huckabee’s candidacy rests on serial non sequiturs: I am a Christian, therefore I am a conservative, therefore whatever I have done or propose to do with “compassionate,” meaning enlarged, government is conservatism. And by the way, anything I denote as a “moral” issue is beyond debate other than by the uncaring forces of greed.Many Iowans think it would be wise to nominate a candidate who, when the Republicans were asked during a debate to raise their hands if they do not believe in evolution, raised his. But, then, Huckabee believes America can be energy-independent in 10 years, so he has peculiar views about more than paleontology.Huckabee combines pure moralism with incoherent populism: He wants Washington to impose a nationwide ban on smoking in public, show more solicitude for Americans of modest means and impose more protectionism, thereby raising the cost of living for Americans of modest means.


This man's affability is hiding the fact he will be our Jimmy Carter. Read his book: he is a total socialist slime ball who has been more open about government intrusion into our lives then virtually any of the democrats. Opposing gay marriage and abortion does not make you a conservative. All it means is that you are not intent on destroying cultural norms that have existed for thousands of years.

Now there are those out there defending Huckabee's fiscal record (Dick Morris) but the facts simply do not allow for such conclusions:

-Huckabee signed a 3-cent gas tax increase in 1999
-He called for a state sales tax hike in 2002
-He signed a 25-cent cigarette tax hike in 2003
-He allowed a major tax hike package to pass in 2004
-He opposes school choice
-He increased spending 65.3% from 1996 to 2004
