Chelsea Clinton: You Cannot Have it Both Ways
Recently, Chelsea Clinton has become more involved with her parents’ campaign. This week, for example, she spoke at Stanford University advocating for her mother, which is different from her standoffish demeanor of the past. Although Chelsea, like all other Americans, has the freedom of speech and the right to support her parents, if she continues to take this path, she is no longer allowed to claim immunity from media criticism or critique from the American people.
While I have several disagreements with Ann Coulter’s style of debate, she made a very valid point in the past that Democrats and liberals always use victims and others who are immune from criticism to advocate their viewpoints. They often use young children to advocate for Big Government, or widows of 9/11 to attack George Bush, or Michael J. Fox to advocate taxpayer-sponsored stem cell research. Again, all these people have a right to speak their minds, and enter the political debate; they just cannot claim immunity from criticism once they do so by virtue of their victim status.
Chelsea Clinton, like typical victims of the Left, has been given a complete pass from the media. While Rudy Giuliani’s family has become front and center of the recent election, Bill and Hillary have warned the media to stay away from Chelsea. That was fair in the past since Chelsea seemed to stay away from the cameras and did not publicly express her political opinions. But, now that appears to be changing.
The truth is that standard rules should apply to everyone. If someone wants to advocate for a politician, policy, or speak freely about his or her own political views, expect to be hated and loved by half of the Country. It is just the way it is with American politics. Conversely, if one wants to keep his or her shirt clean, stay on the sidelines.
Chelsea Clinton appears to be ready to get in the game and it will be interesting to see if the media starts to treat her like an adult.
