With the recent polls leaning in Barack Obama's favor, it very likely will be a Democratic year, and that doesn't just include the Presidency. If I were to make a large wager, the Democrats will win seats in the House of Representatives and create a filibuster proof Senate.

All I can say is be careful what you wish for.

Bill Clinton has been praised by Democrats for creating a surplus in the treasury. Few people, however, can draw a diagram of how Bill himself actually did that.

Since the Constitution does not grant the President the right to create spending bills, only Congress is actually responsible for taxing and spending; the President simply has the ability to block what he doesn't like with his veto pen.

While this may seem elementary to some, it had important ramifications in the 1990s and the 2000s after Bush was elected:

1. Bill Clinton had to deal with a extremely popular House of Representatives led by Newt Gingrich. Gingrich and Conservatives worked to cut overall spending (what Conservatives once were known for supporting), and in fact their partisan differences from Clinton contributed to that fact. Even Bill Clinton would be praised by Democrats for using the Veto pen against a hyper partisan House. Consequently, a surplus was created not because of bipartisan cooperation, but because of opposition between the Centrist Presidency and Conservative Congress;

2. However, when George (Big Government) Bush was President, it forced him to stand up to his own Party, which he demonstrated an unwillingness to do. He didn't veto a single spending Bill during his first term in office, creating a massive deficit. His tax cuts actually increased revenues to the treasury by 800 billion dollars (Yes, Tax Cuts Increase Revenue), but the spending got out of control and surpassed the increase;

3. When the Democrats took control of the House and the Senate in 2006, the Democrats were much more willing to spend ($3,100,000,000,000), but Bush still demonstrated his impotence with the veto pen;

4. While this all took place, the Left could sit back and blame the amorphous "Bush Policies" for creating a deficit. But, the Bush Bashing could only work up until to 2007. After that, it gets a little tiring even for the Democratic supporters who saw their own Party in power;

5. But, if the Democrats sweep in November, who will the Democrats be able to blame for all the world's problems? The Democrats will have to take full responsibility for everything. In fact, the Democrats, who promise to spend more money, will certainly not find a Veto pen from Barack Obama.

So, all I can say is that be careful what you wish for. In general, the public respects Conservatives when they act like Conservatives by cutting spending and taxes. In fact, for decades, balanced budgets were a Republican platform.

It is very likely in 2010, the Democratic supporters will be forced to do what I did in 2006: Defending the indefensible.
