Why Don't You Support Conservatism?

Imagine the year is 2012: Barack Obama has been in office for 4 years, and the Democrats have maintained their majority. Then I want you to imagine that during that time Barack Obama has done the following:

1. Privatized Social Security;

2. Invaded Pakistan;

3. Cut Medicare and Medicaid;

4. Repealed the federal assault weapons Ban;

5. Expanded Defense Spending to support a possible invasion of Iran;

6. Expanded the Bush Tax cuts; and

7. Approved a Federal Ban on Same-Sex Marriage.

Then I want you to imagine that the media on a day-to-day basis referred to Barack Obama as a Progressive. In fact, I want you to imagine that the Republicans argue that Obama demonstrated why Progressive policies are a failure. Lastly, I want you to imagine that Obama's record of failure was used to justify why Democrats are a dishonest Party.

Well, that is exactly what happened with George W. Bush and the Republican Party over the last 8 years.

Democrats rarely hesitate to cite the 1990s as a decade when Bill Clinton brought America prosperity with his Progressive economic policies. We hear about how he balanced the budget and restored our standing around the world. We are always reminded that the stock market was booming and the middle-class had a high standard of living.

Strangely, the following are ignored:

1. Bill Clinton eliminated welfare as we know it in America with TANF;

2. Bill Clinton expanded free trade with NAFTA;

3. Bill Clinton balanced the budget, which has been a Conservative policy since the beginning of......Conservatism;

4. All spending and tax bills had to be approved by a very Conservative Republican Congress (See Article I of the Constitution); and

5. Alan Greenspan was in charge of the Federal Reserve.

Now fast forward to the year 2000, before George Bush gets elected. Conservatives, who have seen the great record of the Republican House of Representatives are hoping to continue down that path. They are looking for the following:

1. An across the board tax cut;

2. A cut in spending across the board;

3. An option to Privatize Social Security;

4. Cuts in Medicare and Medicaid (or at least making them more efficient);

5. Abolition of the Department of Education so that local schools can experiment with education and meet the needs of local communities, rather than top-down unaccountable federal mandates;

6. Reduction of all subsidies;

7. No Nation building;

8. Reduction of Illegal Immigration and increase legal immigration; and

9. Support for the principles of Federalism so that States and local governments can pass policies that are specific to their needs.

Then George Bush and the Republicans take office in 2000 and, other than the tax cuts:

1. Increase spending on a massive scale;

2. Spend more on Education and Foreign Aid than any time in history;

3. Expand the Department of Education with No Child Left Behind;

4. Increases farm subsidies, Pork and all other subsidies;

5. Attempt to spread Democracy around the world and Nation Build;

6. Increases Illegal Immigration;

7. Destroys all notions of Federalism;

8. Pass Medicare Part D, the largest spending program since LBJ;

9. George Bush abandons the Free Market to save the free market; and

10. We socialize our entire Country in the last 5 months of the Bush Presidency.

While all this is happening, Conservatives are sitting at home thinking: "I didn't support any of this. I wanted fiscal discipline and what we did in the 1990s."

Lastly, Democrats and the Media blame "Conservatives" for creating this mess and use this to demonstrate why the Country is ready for a Progressive leader.

Barack Obama then gets elected, and Republicans like John McCain and Mitch McConnell (those who supported the Bush Policies) are portrayed as moderate by the Media, while Conservatives who would like to actually see Conservative principles implemented (those demonstrated in the 1990s) are considered the Far-Right extremists.

I feel like I'm living in the twilight zone. If Democrats were so happy with Bill Clinton: Why don't you support Conservatism?
